A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
