PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on 14 different occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired two times in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital leveler in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to complete a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time champions PSG, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the last 13 seasons.
